Governors Island has welcomed more than 30,000 visitors since the 2009 season began on May 30. That is more than twice as many people as visited during that same period last year! There has been a lot going on out here — we had a polo match with Prince Harry, an incredible jazz performance by Michael Arenella and His Dreamland Orchestra, the incredible and interactive FIGMENT, and so much more. We also just introduced our free ferry to Brooklyn and recently kicked off Free Bike Fridays.

Visitors enjoy the sounds of Michael Arenella's Dreamland Orchestra

I was an Army Brat and lived on Govenors Island from 1961-1967. (Kindergarden through fourth grade) Looking back I have come to realize how fortunate I was to have had this special opportunity. The view my sisters and I had every night and day ffrom our bedroom window was of the Statue of Liberty. At night she was lit up so beautiful. Our own private night light. My Dad was enlisted so we were in the apartments not the big houses. Saturdays all five of us kids would walk acoss the field and catch a movie. Only a quarter to get in and five cents for a box of candy which had to be obtained in the old fashioned vending machines as there was no concession stand. Safe in New York City. We really had it all.
It is such a pleasure to hear from people who have a special connection to Governors Island. Thank you so much for sharing your story. I hope you have a chance to come out this summer and see it again!
