The New York Times today has a fantastic article about Governors Island, complete with a great audio slideshow and a map. A related article, “A Selective Guide to Island Hopping,” is a succinct guide to the Island’s offerings. The article starts off by profiling a typical visitor, who was introduced as a curmudgeonly Manhattanite living a short bike ride away:
It’s New York’s best-kept secret,” Mr. Hanan, 45, gushed minutes later, while biking along the island’s eastern edge with views of the Buttermilk Channel, the Brooklyn waterfront and the East River bridges.
So, the secret’s out. The amazing thing about Governors Island – even to us- is that no matter how many people come to visit, our 172 acres never feels crowded. Come see for yourself this weekend!

I was wondering if anyone would know if there was a list of the weddings that took place on the island. My Mom and Dad, Mr. and Mrs. George Lawrence were married in Lady Star of the Sea Chapel in 1943 and at the time, were one of only two weddings that were permitted to take place there. My Dad took care of the chapel during the war when he wasn’t over seas in battle. Gen. Drumm’s daughter I believe was the other bride. It was said that their wedding picture hung in the chapel . Was curious if anyone knows of any information regarding this.
