Governors Island, a 172 acre island in the heart of New York Harbor, is only 800 yards from Lower Manhattan, and even closer to Brooklyn. It is a world unto itself, unique and full of promise.

The Trust for Governors Island is working to make the Island a destination with great public open space, as well as future education, not for profit and commercial facilities. The Bloomberg Administration is investing more than $250 million to build an extraordinary new park and public spaces and to bring the Island's infrastructure into the 21st century.

Record Breaking Day

Thousands of visitors watched polo on the South Island fields on Sunday.

Governors Island had a record breaking day on Sunday, when nearly 18,000 visitors came to the Island. Many of our visitors came dressed in their best seersucker and fabulous hats to watch the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic. These visitors made Sunday the biggest public access day ever for the Island, and the number of visitors over the course of the day even surpassed the number of those going to the Statue of Liberty!

: Visitors enjoyed food and drink at the match, as well as some pre-polo entertainment. Here, visitors play petanque.

And if you missed coming out to the Island this past weekend, there are still 16 more weekends in the season to experience all there is to do on the Island. Next weekend…FIGMENT!
