Field Report: Pre-cast Preview

One feature of the new park and public space project that you won’t see anywhere else is its distinctive curb edging. The curb’s main job is to define and ornament the new paths and green spaces, but in some locations the elegant, wide curb will rise up to a height that is comfortable to sit on. Last week, builders installed a mock-up of the curb edge for the design team and the Trust to review. The curb is made of pre-cast concrete, which sounds industrial and cold, but West 8′s design is even more comfortable and lovely than we imagined! The slide show below includes some photos of the team examining the mock-ups, as well as a rendering of the Play Lawn that shows the curb in its final “habitat”.

  1. I hope the area between the curbs is wider than the present roads on the Island. At present I find it challenging to dodge the pedestrians when I ride a bike on the roads.
