In addition to the incredible exhibits and programs taking place in the Governors Galleries, Building 12 and Building 110 this weekend, there are special events as well, including:
Saturday, September 8: Jalopy Theatre’s Outdoor Music on Governors Island, Noon
Celebrate the end of summer with an afternoon of outdoor traditional music at five locations on Governors Island, featuring 15 local acts performing a variety of Appalachian old-time string band music, Americana, jug band, blues, Son Jarocho, and original folk songs. That’s right, 25 hours of live music in a single day. The free street music fair takes place along the circular path on the northern side of Governors Island, where attendees can leisurely walk and bicycle between five locations where bands will each play 45-minute sets. Featured performers include: M. Shanghai String Band, Willy Gantrim, Radio Jarocho, The Whiskey Spitters, The 4 O’clock Flowers, Karen Duffy, The Brotherhood of the Jugband Blues, Feral Foster, The Maybells, the East River String Band, the Easy Rollers, and the fabulous duo of Pat Conte and Joe Bellulovich.
Sunday, September 9: Earth Matter Hosts “Bird Friend’s Walk and Talk,” 10 AM (Take the 10 AM ferry and meet at Soissons Dock)
Guided by Annie Barry, a long time National Park Service volunteer and National Audubon Society member, you’ll take a discovery walk around the island perimeter. See which of our fine feathered friends call this territory their home. Learn their secrets and witness their beauty. A special stop will be made at the Earth Matter Compost Learning Center to meet the famous composting chickens, and the grackles and sparrows who keep them company! Governor’s Island is a rare and special place that is fast becoming one of NYC’s premier public green spaces. Bring binoculars and wear comfortable walking shoes.
This is also the second weekend of the 4 Heads’ Governors Island Art Fair. So be sure to stop by Building 12 to check it out!
