Welcome to Governors Island

Governors Island, a 172 acre island in the heart of New York Harbor, is only 800 yards from Lower Manhattan, and even closer to Brooklyn. It is a world unto itself, unique and full of promise.

The Trust for Governors Island is working to make the Island a destination with great public open space, as well as future education, not for profit and commercial facilities. The Bloomberg Administration is investing more than $250 million to build an extraordinary new park and public spaces and to bring the Island's infrastructure into the 21st century.

Field Report: What’s in this Time Capsule?

While you were dancing the Macerena, the students of PS 26 were putting together this time capsule and saying goodbye to Governors Island, which closed as a Coast Guard base later that year.

The marker for the time capsule is encased in a wooden box during construction to protect it.

I wasn’t there for the time capsule but I am so happy that they are leaving at least a little bit of our past alone. Sad when time marches on…….
