Prospective Tenants for Governors Island

At our public Board of Directors meeting last month, the Trust discussed finalists from the Request for Proposals (RFP) for adaptive re-use of buildings within the Island’s Historic District issued last December. The Trust has been evaluating those proposals with respect to criteria outlined in the RFP, including respondents’ qualifications and financial capacity, financial impact to the Trust, economic impact to the City, and compatibility with the vision for Governors Island as an extraordinary public resource with a vibrant mix of uses and activities.

The three finalists are:

  • Quadratec (QC Terme Group) proposes a day spa open to the public that offers a broad range of spa services. The spa will include indoor facilities, outdoor pools and a light café in buildings 111, 112, and 114, former residential buildings on the northern edge of the Island. Quadratec is in partnership with the Colonnade Group, and the project will be based on QC Terme’s spas in Italy (www.termemilano.com, www.qctermetorino.it, www.bagnidibormio.it, http://www.termedipre.it).
  • CIEE is the leading provider of international education and exchange. Founded in 1947, CIEE creates and administers programs that allow U.S. college and university students and educators to study and teach abroad, and international students and professionals to study and work in the U.S. CIEE has proposed a flagship campus for 250 international students who would reside on Governors Island while pursuing educational, cultural, and work experiences in New York City.   The campus will be located in Building 12, a former residential building along the Buttermilk Channel, and Pershing Hall, with classrooms and other spaces framed by an iconic set of landmarked murals. CIEE submitted their proposal in partnership with Macro Sea, a New York City-based real estate development firm known for developing creative spaces around the world. • LMCC is a 40-year old organization dedicated to advancing artists, transforming audiences and catalyzing communities. LMCC was one of Governors Island’s first two tenants. Since 2010, LMCC has provided space for artists-in-residence and an opportunity for visitors to the Island to engage with LMCC artists and their work. LMCC is proposing an expansion of their current Art Center in building 110 on the northern side of Governors Island to include additional studios, a media lab, exhibition spaces and screening room. Upon completion of successful lease negotiations, each of these organizations will invest millions of dollars in landmark buildings located in the Island’s National Historic District, and will contribute to the goal of Governors Island as a lively, year-round, 24/7 sustainable destination and resource for New York City.  Please click here to see the President’s Report describing these tenants.

  1. HI… FROM A 1960 GRADUATE OF NURNBERG AMERICAN HIGH SCHOOL… WITH A FAVORITE CHAPTER… A FEW YEARS LATER WHEN “MOM AND DAD” WERE ARMY OFFICERS AND WE LIVED TOGETHER ON GOVERNOR’S ISLAND.

SO OF COURSE IT’S IMPOSSIBLE TO LOSE (EMOTIONAL) TOUCH WITH THE ISLAND.

BEST YET… AS MY 27 YEAR OLD SON/AIRLINE-PILOT JAKE… MADE SURE I DIDN’T MISS THE DAY ON THE ISLAND… AND THE GREAT FLASHBACK OF RIDING THE FERRY BACK-AND-FORTH FROM MANHATTAN TO THE ISLAND… WHAT A GREAT TREK INTO THE PAST.

AS A NOW 40-YEAR RETIRED RADIO/TV/NEWSPAPER REPORTER IN LOS ANGELES… HERE’S A LONG WAY OF SAYING: LOVE GOVERNOR’S ISLAND, DON’T EVER LET IT GO. BOTH OF MY PARENTS (Lt. Col Wm. Jacob Smith and 2ndLt /Nurse Margaret T. Smith) ARE LONG GONE NOW…BUT WE STILL REMEMBER OUR GREAT TIME ON GOVERNOR’S ISLAND… THANK YOU billsmithnews@netzero.net Bill Smith, P.O. box 516, Malibu CA 90265/. SEE YOU NEXT SUMMER ON THE ISLAND.
