Thank you Elizabeth,
Your response raises a few more questions/criticisms/statements.
Who are you protecting the Harbor for/from? The Public? How is the “Public” supposed to value a resource they have no understanding of or connection to? Education is key here, and with little available classrooms/waterfront available how might the public come to know that which is there own?
It is not necessary or desirable to fillet and scale fish on site. Peoples home kitchens could provide a ready made and more sanitary solution.
. I have never cleaned a fish anywhere but home or at the beach where it would not intrude or offend anyone. Personal responsibility is key and should be encouraged. Would you suggest the prohibition of all sale of food items in order to stop your pest problem? Would be way more effective in my opinion.
May I remind you that it is not your staffs job to police recreational harvest. That falls within the Department of Environmental Conservations jurisdiction. They are well staffed and funded by licenses paid for by responsible anglers like myself and many others in the state of New York. You are in the fine State of New York correct?
Your responses are well appreciated. Looking forward to a continuing dialog.
Thanks,
Bryan Kaczkin
Thank you very much for your feedback. Like all policies on Governors Island, it is helpful to hear from the public about their perspective and their use of the Island. As we plan for next season, I will certainly look into the fishing policy on the Island with the operations team and discuss options and ideas for how we can create the best possible visitor experience as well as provide programs and activities that can be well used and enjoyed by the public.
Would love to see late fall/ winter access. The fishery is world class @ that time of year. Perhaps for specified and organized events/groups/tournaments? Also, may I ask as to why you enforce a catch and release only policy on the island? I understand that consumption of harbor fish should be limited, but your policy derides the fact that there are beautiful healthy stocks of migratory Striped Bass, Bluefish, Weakfish, Fluke, Flounder, Tautog, Bonito and many other species that team past and around your beautiful island. The bass that migrate through here are netted in other states, trucked back here, and sold at local markets at up to $30 per pound! It’s a resource the public has a right to and they should be trusted to make their own choices as to what they catch and keep within state and federal law.
Although we realize that other city parks and piers have a different policy. We decided to ask for catch and release for a number of reasons:
1. Protect a sustainable harbor
2. Avoid the mess of filleting and scaling the fish – also avoiding the rodents and seagulls that could follow
3. The Trust does not currently have staff to check that visitors are keeping regulation size fish or that they have proper license to do so.
On Tuesday September 13th, I missplaced my sweater while visiting Governers Island. Is there a lost and found department I could call?
Please let me have that phone number.
My thanks.
There is a lost and found in Building 140 on the Island. On a public day you can go by or you can call security at 212-809-3299.
If I lose an item on one of the ferries, (it think it was the free East River Ferry to Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn) would it be held by the ferry company or does it go to Governor’s Island lost and found?
If you lost an item on the East River Ferry Service, please contact NY Waterways directly.
Can concert goers bring chairs to the island?
If you are coming for the Dave Matthews Band Caravan concert or for Rock the Bells, please check those specific websites for information about what is permitted. If you are coming over for a concert on the Island on Colonels Row (the Rite of Summer classical music concert for example), you are permitted to bring chairs.
anyone know if there is a lost and found for Governor’s Island? many thanks-Jonathan
There is a lost and found located in Building 140, our security building or you can call 212-809-3299.
Hi,
So no more smoking section on the island?
Thanks.
There is another group on Facebook that may interest the Coast Guardsmen who served on Governor’s Island, the Cardinal Spellman Servicemen’s Club, NYC. We would love it if you could post a link to our group. More and more people who have fond memories of Spellman’s are joining.
Thanks!
I am another United States Coast Guard’s man that was stationed on Governors Island and spent a lot of time at Cardinal Spellman’s servicemen’s club from 1968 thru 1971
I’m really bad at finding notifications and came across your comment now while I was sorting my in box. Sorry.
I am glad that you joined the Facebook group and that you have good memories of the Club.
Hi, Thanks for taking care of the cat and for trying to find her original home. Meantime, please don’t feed her tuna fish. It’s not a proper diet for a cat. Please go to a pet store and get her some proper cat food – try her on dry food and canned.
I suggest you name her Esther for Esther Williams, who swam the English Channel.
I thought of two names, Prince of Tides (or in this case Princess!) and Circe, a Greek goddess who lived on and island.
Question:are there any hotels on the island? Or lodging accomodstions?
I am glad to see they kept the cat. I think you should name it.
Governor Kittie
I used to visit Governor’s Island often as a girl because my dad was in the Army. We would stay at the guest house, which was run by Jim Gordon at that time. He told us about the WWII (WWI?) mule that used to have the run of the island and would stand in the middle of the ferry dock and hold things up until he could be coaxed to move so the ferry could leave.
And it used to be easy money to bet someone they couldn’t name the only golf course within half a mile of Wall Street.
One year when I was a young woman we spent Christmas on the Island. Santa Clause came around Christmas morning riding in a jeep!
I’m so happy to hear the island is being turned into a historical park and that there are so many great activitie going on there already. It’s nice to know so many more people can now enjoy this special place.
I thought Madeline would be a good name for the amazing cat. It comes from Magdala and means elegant, great, and magnificant. I thought that was fitting. She is definitely a magnificant cat.
Hi, I have a suggestion for your kitties name. It is Sirena Felice Gattino. I believe that she came from Jersy, which of course makes her Italian and since she swam so far she must be part fish! Her name translated to English would mean Mermaid Lucky cat. Too cute! I also think that if you choose my suggestion I should be entitled to a free round trip ticket to the naming cerimony, where I will officially dub her with said name! That would make us both “Lucky” to be there. Hope you like my suggestion.

I was stationed there 1956 1957 in the Mp’s in charge of accident investigations .There were only a few vehicles & the only accident was a school bus backed into a civilian vehicle .So it wasn’t recorded.I would like to see the patch we MP’s wore at 74 i can’t remember it ,but I do remember the 1st army patch.
Can I take my dogs to the island?
Don,
Thank you for your email. Pets are not permitted on Governors Island. For a full list of rules visit http://www.govisland.com/html/visit/rules.shtml
hey i was looking for tickets for a tour on your blog, on the calendar page this link doesnt work http://www.nps.gov/gois
Thanks for catching! We fixed that!
Such a sweet blog post! I’m so glad you decided to publish it.
Greetings:
I was stationed at GI while attending ET School & serving on the WMEC 166 Tamaroa (1974-1977).
Will there ever be an opportunity to tour Liggett Hall (Bldg 400) where I both lodged & attended ET School?
As an aside, will there ever be an attempt to return decommissioned cutters like the Tamaroa to GI as a museum, etc.?
Thanks,
Gary Collier
Brooklyn
Hi Gary,
Thanks for your comment. We always enjoy hearing from those people who lived and/or worked on Governors Island.
In response to your question, Liggett Hall is closed to the public unless there is a particular program happening within it. For example, in 2009, Creative Time used Liggett Hall as the site of one of their installations as a part of their Island-wide program “PLOT 09: This World and Nearer Ones.” Visitors could enter portions of the building to view the installation. And there are of course possibilities that Liggett will be open in the future if other partners choose to use it as a venue for their programs or activities.
In terms of returning Coast Guard cutters, you may be aware that last year, Yankee Pier was refurbished and now these kinds of vessels can land there once again. We do a wide variety of outreach to maritime partners to see if they would like to bring historic and educational vessels to the Island to provide programming for our visitors. If the Coast Guard were interested in bringing vessels back to the Island for a museum or for programming, we would be more than pleased to speak with them about the possibility, as we do with all potential partners who demonstrate an interest in Governors Island and its development.
Greetings Elizabeth:
Thank you!
I will stay tuned for new developments. GI is to me & so many people a special place of memories.
Gary
I was a Military Policeman on the Island 63/64 and worked Desk Sgt, Ferry Security and also at Castle Williams as a shift Officer. I was a SP/4
I met, fell in love with a Dependent of SFC Phil Miller, we married Nov 1st 63 and today we are still in love and GrandParents.
The Island was probably one of the best bases I served at and I went back in 2006 and hope to go back again in 2010…does anyone know Palmer McGrews e mail address so I can contact him?
I have given a series of Art/Picnic/Yoga Excursions on Governors Island this summer and everyone had a fantastic time on the island of both fantastic and simple wonders.
Congratulations Leslie Koch for a perfect mix of wondrous installations and events…
Yours, Renee Riccardo
Thanks so much Renee. It is always great to hear good feedback from our visitors. We hope you will coem back out again!
My father was stationed on Governors Island in 1976-1977. I attended the 6th grade at the school on the island. I have wonderful memories of that time and the friends I made there. I would love to know about any other children whose families were stationed there at that time.
Kathy Turner Mallette
There are a number of groups of former GI kid-residents that stay in touch and even have reunions. I believe there is one planned for 2010. Try googling “governors island coast guard brats” and you’ll find links to Facebook and other groups.
Hey, Governor’s Island fans!
I love Governor’s Island and make it a point to visit every year. When the travel website Trazzler introduced the NYCGo travel-writing contest this year with the theme of “oasis,” the island was the first thing I thought of. You can read my blurb about the island here: http://bit.ly/161r37.
It’d be great exposure for Governor’s Island if fans would “wishlist” my trip. Doing so is easy. You sign in at http://www.trazzler.com (Facebook users can sign in using their Facebook account, or you can create an account there), go to my trip, and just click the green button that says “add to wishlist.” Thanks for helping me spread the word!
I just read the article in the New Yorker about the history and hopeful future of Governor’s Island. I have recently relocated to NY from Chicago IL. The Island reminds me a little of what Navy Pier in Chicago used to be. the pier had become run down and forgotten. Then two things transformed Navy Pier into a very popular part of downtown Chicago. They are 1) a world class Shakespearean Theatre and 1) a Ferris wheel. Having recently visited London’s “Eye” and was blown away by the views form this elegent ride. The “Eye” is a ferris wheel much like the one at the Chicago exhibition that could accommodate a room full of people on each car.. Has anyone suggested a large, beautiful Ferris wheel that would be the destination attraction that will make Governor’s Island a “must do” day trip in NYC?
Hi David:
Those are both intriguing ideas. We have indeed received several proposals for Ferris wheels similar to the you mentioned. The views would no doubt be stunning, but we would need to make sure that the big wheel is economically feasible, environmentally sound, and is acceptable to the Island’s many stakeholders. Thanks for your interest in Governors Island.
Ellen
Hi!
I’ve been wanting to visit Governors Island since I found out that they were opening to the public. Now I’ve finally found some “time” & would like to visit with my family ranging from ages 15 mths to 60 yrs old. Besides biking, what other activities are allowed on the island? (I’m thinking frisbee or badminton.) I noticed that picnics are allowed & want to know where on the island would be a good spot to settle. Also, are coolers allowed??
I want to make sure I cover all of my bases. Thanks so much for your help. I can’t wait to visit the island!
-Angie
Angie:
Coolers are allowed. You are welcome to bring all the food you want, but you are not allowed to grill or bring alcohol. I would recommend Picnic Point for the picnic, but that might be a bit of a walk with a cooler. Another good option that is close to the ferry terminal is Nolan Park. When you get to the Island you will see maps and there will be Park Rangers and people you can ask for directions. Everything is in walking distance. Something fun for everyone to do would be mini golf (also free). There are also free art classes donated by the Children’s Museum of the Arts. You could certainly set up badminton or play frisbee. Behind Nolan Park is a large open area called the Parade Grounds which is a perfect place for pick up recreational games. There are hammocks, benches, swings down at Picnic Point. We also have a ton of arts exhibitions (mini golf, which is part of the sculpture garden “City of Dreams” being one of them). The yellow flags on buildings, and stands will direct you to the Creative Time show Plot/09, a show featuring the work of 19 international artists. These are our on going activities. For a list of our other programs check out http://www.govisland.com/Visit_the_Island/default.asp. We also update this blog daily with information about upcoming events, activities and information.
Hope you have a great visit!
Does anyone know if dogs are allowed for the RECESS event?
Hi Caroline,
Dogs are not permitted on Governors Island.
Glad to see so many people enjoying GI, i was the last Coast Guard Security(military police) officer on the island when we gave it to GSA/1997/98. My family misses our time on the island .. Do u still use the Building that was the post office/ police dept. i remember that had two jail cells in the downstairs. I retired to texas but would like to come visit one day…My question is are u open year round or only summer months?/
Charles, thank you so much for your comments. That building you mentioned, Building 140, is currently our security office and the location of the National Park Service store. The building is well maintained. Governors Island is only open from May until October. We would love to have you come to see your old stomping grounds. I hope Texas is treating you well.
Is the mini golf open already and if so will it be open through October?
The mini-golf is open. The course will be up until October. Each hole is designed by a different artist. Mini-golf is free to play.
If you lose an ID with Bike and Roll you can contact them at (212) 260-0400 or nyc@bikeandroll.com.
Hi, guys. Wondering about the ferry schedule from Brooklyn this summer. Is it _definitely_ running out of Brooklyn only on Sunday of this weekend (the 26th)? Thanks. –Alex
Hi Alex,
We actually do have service to Brooklyn both days this weekend. http://www.govisland.com/Visit_the_Island/directions.asp.
Ellen
Can you explain what this music venue The Beach at Governors Island is like. Building or tent? Roof? Chairs? Sand or other floor? If outdoors, smoking?
Taylor,
The space is a tent, but it is very sturdy with lighting and a stage and all of that. There are currently not chairs, and the standing area backs into the sand. Smoking is allowed, but it is limited. For other questions please contact Water Taxi Beach.
Thanks
I will visit the island with my little girls. do you have child sized bike to rent?
Nechama,
We have child sized bikes to rent (they are free to rent of Friday’s!) with training wheels if necessary. If you have anyother questions you might want to check out Bike and Roll’s website.
Hi –
Where can I sign up/buy tickets for the Mos Def concert in September?
Zena
Zena,
To purchase any tickets, please go online to http://www.thebeachconcerts.com/. Hope you have a great time!
hi
we are a familly of 4 from the caribbean . is it nice for kids too. we are loocking for fun things but not expencive
Hi Isabelle,
Thank you for your email. Governors Island is the perfect place for a family of four to spend the day. The ferry ride and admission to the Island are free! On fridays, we have free bikes for kids and adults to use and enjoy more than five miles of car free biking. Your kids might also love free artist designed miniature golf and acres of green space to run and play. We also have some of the best views of the Statue of Liberty and New York City that you can find. There are also free art classes for kids every weekend between 10 AM and 3 PM sponsored by the Chidlren’s Musem of the Arts. There is so much to do here and we hope to see you on the Island.
Hi. I remember there being a kayak area (maybe even free). Is that still happening this summer, and can you provide any info? I don’t see it mentioned anywhere on the Island site or blog. Are there certain times, a way to sign up, required clothing? Thanks!
Kate,
Last year Downtown Boathouse ran the free kayaking program. We are hoping to have that again this year, but as of yet it is has not started. Keep checking the blog for more information. We will keep you posted! But, in the mean time, you might want to plan a trip out here on July 18th for City of Water Day. There will be tons of harbor and boat related activities for people of all ages!
I have heard that Governor’s Island is good place to watch the July 4th Fireworks this year. However, the ferry schedule does not run that late.
Is the island open for the Hudson River viewing this year? and if so does the Ferry run late?
Thanks,
William
Sorry, the Island closes at 7pm on Saturday, July 4th. If it’s any consolation, they’re being launched too far up the Hudson River this year to be visible from the Island. The Island is a great place for a pre-fireworks picnic though!
Hi,
Is there another one of those vintage 20′s parties on Governors Island this coming July 4th weekend?
Thanks
No Jazz Age Lawn Party this weekend, but there are lots of other things to do here! Check our website for updates: http://www.govisland.com/Visit_the_Island/default.asp
I was stationed on Governors Island in the USCG from April 1973 through October 1976. I have not been back since that time. I would like to visit before contruction begins to remember it as it was largely. Can you advise the time frame I have to do before work begins? Is there any possibility of individually touring buildings I lived or worked in briefly?
I am excited about the plans you have for GI but would really like to relive the history in its current state.
To Whom It May Concern
When I was at the Governors Island ball fields last year I saw that there were barbecue pits near the fire station. Will they be open to use this year and if not when would they be available and are there any other areas designated for barbecuing
Thank you,
Robert
Robert,
We do not allow barbecuing on Governors Island. But feel free cook at home, and come out with a picnic!
I’ve got one question for you…do people actually LIVE on the island year round? The reason I ask is http://www.city-data.com lists the10004 zip code as top zip code with the highest 2004 average Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) for individuals (pop 1,000+) and gives your population as 1225. It also says you have both owner occupied houses and condos as well as rentals. Is this true? If so, where do I go for for information regarding living on island? Thanks.
Dana,
People do not actually live on Governors Island. The 10004 zip code does include other parts of Manhattan besides just Governors Island.
I am inquiring as to whether or not there is a Police Station situated on Govenors Island?.
James,
There is a fire department on Governors Island, but no police station. However, for safety, we do have offices come out some weekends.
Thanks
I was stationed on Governers Island Oct-Dec 1978. I was in the Coast Guard. It was and is a very special
place to me. I would like to go back some day to visit.
I am very happy to hear that it is going to have a great future and live on and make special memories for so many people. Dan Middleville MI
Hi!
I stumbled accross some past info and pictures of the jazz festivals Governor’s Island hosts, and was wanting to make plans to attend the next one.
I’m from Orlando, FL and would like to bring a small group. We wanted to start planning soon so that we could make arrangements for travel up there, but the dates for 2009 are not posted yet. Do you know when these dates might be or when you will have some definate dates scheduled for this event?
Thanks!
Sarah
Sarah,
We would love to have the Jazz Age Festival here again this summer but right now they are not scheduled to come again. Please check back on our blog and our website for our upcoming events.
Jules,
That’s exactly the kind of question that we’re asking ourselves and our park design team right now as we continue to develop a Master Plan for a 40-acre park and 2.2 mile Great Promenade and the restoration of the Historic District landscapes.
In addition to the park, the Island will also be home to a mix of non-profit and commercial tenants, such as education and hospitality, which will operate year round.
The Park Master Plan will be ready by this summer, and we’re actively seeking feedback from the public. If there are winter activities you’d like to see on the Island, please let us know!
Ellen
Hi, so I’m wondering — what is going to attract people to the island during the cold winter months? I’m interested in the plans that address this. Thanks!
My fondest memory as a child is going on the ferry to the Coast Guard base. . .it was so cool. My parents always would show us where their first apt. was. I as so excited to here it was reopened and cannot wait til May to bring my children there.
Thanks!
Andrea
I lost a video camera in Building 110 yesterday. Whom can I call to see if the camera was found? Thank you.
Michael
The lost and found is in Building 140 (just to the left as you get off the ferry). Otherwise, please email info-gipec@empire.state.ny.us.
I was stationed on Governors Island in the mid 70′s, including the Bicentennial, while I was in the US Coast Guard. I really cherish the time I was there (3.5 years) and want to visit soon. I would also like to bring my children, now grown, to visit too. I live in Texas now, so I must plan carefully.
I have two questions
1. I would like to visit before significant renovations get under way. What time frame would you advise to do so? I really want to experience the island the way I remember it (or as close as possible).
2. Is there any way I could arrange a visit to the area of the island that is closed to the general public? I lived in the Capehart Apartments on the west side of the base, and worked in the industrial buidlings across from LIma pier. It would be great just to be able to at least walk that area of the island one last time before major changes occur
I think the plans to turn the island into a park, while retaining the historical aspects of the island, is wonderful. THe island is such a remarkable retreat from the busy pace of the city. ALso, I hope that you can highlight the role GI played in the early days of flight, as moted by the Whirlybirds monument that stands almost center of the island, south of the old “training center” building that runs east to west across the middle of the island.
Thanks in advance for your feedback.
Sincerely
Mark E Nemier
Fort Worth, Texas
Mark,
You should visit Governors Island soon. We would love to have you out here. Let us know when you plan to visit and we will see if we can arange a tour. All of the buildings north of Liggett Hall (Building 400) will remain as they are. We are doing our best to preserve the character of that space. The buildings to the south are in very bad condition to the point that they are not repairable, and they are slowly coming down one by one. If you would like to talk to one of our rangers about the history on Governors Island please call 212-825-3045 or go online to the NPS website.
Thanks again for your support, and I hope you visit soon.
Hi Richard,
The concerts are held in a green triangle in the Historic District known as “Colonels’ Row.” People set up picnics all over the Historic District, but if you want to be around people and music, a good place to tell folks to meet might be in the Colonels’ Row triangle directly across the street from Building 408. Here’s a link to a map of the Governors Island Historic District: http://www.govisland.com/PDFs/GIMAPltr.pdf
Have fun!
Ellen
Hey there!
I’m a Brooklyn resident who’s having a going-away party at Governor’s Island on Saturday July 19. I’ve never been before and know there is so much going on, I’m just trying to figure out some planning questions and was wondering if you could recommend a space for about fifteen to twenty people to have as a “base” where we could have our picnic and come back to. We’re interested in hearing the concert that day, and being surrounded by other people and groups. We’re not interested in renting out a public space.
From what I’ve gathered thus far, the area is Fort Jay seems to be pretty popular. But where are the other picnic or gathering grounds?
I’d appreciate any input. Thank you so much! We’re really looking forward to this.
Richard
