An impromptu wedding on Governors Island this weekend. Congrats!

How to Get Married on Governors Island in 10 Easy Steps:

  1. Find someone to love.
  2. Propose.
  3. Pick a date and invite your friends and family and a bunch of pirates.
  4. Take the first boat, race down to Picnic Point and arrange all of the wheelbarrow benches in rows like chruch pews.
  5. Stand in front of the Statue of Liberty and say, “I do.”
  6. Kiss.
  7. Fend off pirates who are stealing your new bride.
  8. Have a picnic.
  9. Go on a bike ride around the Island with your guests
  10. Live happily ever after.

Fox 5 New York Shows Us How to Have Fun on Governors Island

Fox 5′s Julie Chang brought her family out to Governors Island for a visit yesterday, and from the look of things they had a great time: bikes, surreys, hammocks, rolling benches, art, views, Water Taxi Beach, a tour by NPS Ranger Mike Shaver. This video is so adorable it makes us want to escape our cubicles and bike around the Island . . .

Summer Streets + Gov Isle = Mondo Car-free Biking

I checked out Summer Streets last Saturday. It’s New York City’s big car-free streets event happening for three Saturdays in August. Since one of the best things about Governors Island is the fact that we’re a car-free island, how can these two things work together? Clarence Eckerson, Streetfilms/Livable Streets auteur and friend of Governors Island, told me about an amazing and ambitious ride he wants to do. I’m calling it Clarence’s Mondo Carfree Saturday. Check it out the map of the route below, and let me know how it goes if you ride it:

Surreys!

Bike surreys have arrived in NYC!  What is a bike surrey many people asked? Well if you dont remember Fred and Wilma Flintstone’s family vehicle this photo may help.  What better way for a family (or any group of 4 or more of all sizes and ages) to enjoy the car-free bike path on Governors Island?

Bike and Roll  has surreys to rent every day we are open (Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays) and we guarantee that you will giggle while you pedal! (yes it is a bit more work pedalling a family of four even if you are all doing it together!)

And bring a camera…a family on a surrey makes a perfect holiday card photo!
